Liberty Elementary School
Mathematical Discovery and Communications Magnet School

A
t Liberty, math is explored as a way of thinking that connects math to aspects of daily life as well as to science, social studies, and literature. Students learn math through ‘Investigations,’ a hands-on math program that helps them learn complex concepts in concrete ways. Investigations provide students opportunities to work individually, in small groups or as a class.

Math Discovery at Math Camp:

Liberty’s outdoor courtyard has become a Math Camp center for learning. For sessions throughout the year each class spends one week at Math Camp working on lessons that connect math to all subject areas, and include rich and exciting math activities that feel more like camp than like traditional school.

Communications Theme:

Liberty’s Communications theme features interactive hands-on activities that encourage inspired and regular use of literacy skills. While developing writing, speaking and computer skills, students are introduced to the areas of television and radio production, as well as marketing, advertising and public relations. Students in the upper grades work in the in-house television production studio, audio studio, video editing suites and state-of-the-art control room.

WLIB, Liberty’s daily TV show, features a puppet show on Mondays to share the Word of the Week. One day is devoted to important character-building traits that are part of the Responsive Classroom focus for positive social interactions.  Other days on WLIB feature Math Wit challenges, Science chats, book recommendations from the school librarian, etc. The TV studio enables teachers across grades to share with the rest of the school what is happening in their class and has become a structure for community building.

“Cornerstone” Literacy Approach:

Cornerstone, a program based on best practices in literacy, provides strategies to help students learn to read, write, think critically, reason, analyze and evaluate information, communicate effectively in a variety of forms, and inquire systematically into any important matter.  These learning strategies apply to learning in all subject areas and create a strong foundation for student success.
