Rebecca M. Johnson Elementary School
Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School

J
ohnson School has become a center for visual and performing arts – a school where students are able to express their creative energies, interests and talents as a central part of their in-school experience. Students are exposed to a wide variety of arts-inspired classes both during the school day and in an After School Arts Enrichment Program.

Visual and Fine Arts:

The arts at Johnson take place in all classrooms across all subject areas. Teachers received extensive training on ways to infuse the arts into their daily lessons and as you walk through the school you will meet many of the products. Giant butterflies with mammoth cocoons made by 2nd graders grace their hallway.  Johnson has two visual art studios where children are actively producing creative products in a variety of mediums.

Music at Johnson:

Students at Johnson are able to compose music and perform music from around the world, including their own. An in-house recording studio is available for students and staff to record their own music CD’s as a way of documenting their growth as musicians and to share their talents with families and friends. Students participate in an in-school chorus and percussion group.

Dance and Movement:

Students at Johnson are exposed to a multitude of forms of artistic expression through movement.  A dance studio — complete with ballet bar, special flooring and wall of mirrors — is accessed by students at all grade levels. The Rebecca Johnson dance troupe takes part in arts celebrations open to the community.

New Outdoor Playground:

The 21st Century Playground Project, a collaborative effort of the City of Springfield and the Hill McKnight Neighborhood Council, is underway.  The playground will be equipped with an amphitheatre, handicapped accessible play equipment, exercise stations, a walking/jogging track, raised planting beds for the science curriculum and a softball diamond for the school and community.

After School Opportunities:

The Ballet Project
A Dramatic Production
Taekwondo (a partnership with US Taekwondo)
