Reggaeton! Rhythm and Music Performance at Van Sickle Middle School

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

February 2013: Van Sickle sixth and seventh grade instrumental students performed for over 300 of their classmates and guests, with professional musicians Jo Sallins, Abimael Robles, and Dan Hendrix. They played a new Reggaeton composition called Baila Nena. Reggaetone is a blend of Latin music traditions that has become extremely popular because of its high energy and urban context.
This performance was the culmination of The Art of Percussion, a five week music residency program with master musician Jo Sallins who composed the piece for this project. Over the course of this program students learned critical skills in musicianship, performance, and collaboration; all designed to support 21st century communications.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer programs like the Art of Percussion because it gives students the opportunity to feel confident, engaged, and energized about being in school and learning across the disciplines,” said school Principal Cheryl DeSpirt.
