Sci Tech Students Excel in State and National Competitions

HSST Health Sciences Academy Students of Excellence:

April 2013:

John NguyenDuring the Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA) state conference and competitions, Sci Tech student John Nguyen, a senior at HSST and participant in HOSA for the past 3 years, prevailed as the State Champion in Medical Math, a 100-question knowledge exam based on medical calculations and conversions.

Engineering Academy Students of Excellence:

May 2013:

HSST students Milad Kuku and Michael Nazario were recognized as student achievers at the state level, winning the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Award for Outstanding Achievement.

The Boston Society of Civil Engineers (a section of the American Society of Civil Engineers) is a professional organization that focuses on professional growth of its members, nurtures future engineers, and advances engineering knowledge. It serves as an advocate, trusted advisor, and steward for public safety in the built environment, investment in sustainable infrastructure, and protection of natural resources. Established in 1848, it is the oldest engineering society in the United States and currently supports over 4,000 members, students and professionals in the civil engineering and construction industries throughout Massachusetts.

HSST Students Compete in National Sea Perch Challenge at Purdue University

SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).  This under-water robot is built from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme.

The SeaPerch Program provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics (STEM) while building an underwater ROV as part of a science and engineering technology curriculum. Throughout the project, students learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications.

Building a SeaPerch ROV teaches basic skills in ship and submarine design and encourages students to explore naval architecture and marine and ocean engineering principles. It also teaches basic science and engineering concepts and tool safety and technical procedures. Students learn important engineering and design skills and are exposed to exciting careers that are possible in naval architecture and naval, ocean, and marine engineering.

Students attending the National competition were Allison Adams (grade 9), Ivan Bylinkin (grade 12), Brevin Brown (grade 10), Jose Bautista (grade 12) and Julia Suheena( grade 12).

Congratulations to all on your impressive showing!
